Today in The Music of New Coke, Duran Duran’s “A View To A Kill from the James Bond film A VIEW TO A KILL which hit the theaters May 24, 1985.

I imagine that if Twitter/Tumblr/Facebook/MySpace had existed in 1985, it would have been overrun with teenage girls amped up on New Coke yelling, “FRIEND ME SIMON!” AND “I LOVE YOU ANDY TAYLOR!”  And while they didn’t have New Media, they were masters of the music video.  (Which I would have loved to have posted here for the, “Bon, Simon Le Bon” line, but EMI has disabled embedding on all the decent feeds of the video.)

Duran Duran would go on to play “A View To A Kill” at Live Aid on July 13, 1985.  It would be the last time the entire band would play together until 2003. Interesting timing considering the return of “Classic” Coke was announced on July 11, 1985, which would be sold along side New Coke (eventually becoming Coke II) until late in 2002 when Coca-Cola stopped selling New Coke in the US.

My guess is that New Coke posed some sort of health hazard to frosted hair and Duran Duran couldn’t risk losing one of the Taylors.
