Just blowing the dust off this place since it’s been a little while since I’ve posted on the good old Black and Gold Tchotchkes. Why the silence here over the past month? Well, a few different reasons really.

Last year I didn’t post during the Penguins Stanley Cup run and I was worried that if I posted during this year’s playoffs, I would jinx the team. Plus, I had the same thought this year as I did last year: Why bother writing about the Pens when those nuts over at The Pensblog kill it anyway. I’m lazy and they’re funny. Win-win for me.

Also, I’ve been holding off on talking any more about Ben until the dust has settled on the Georgia mess.  Today Lord Rodger Goodell said Roethlisberger could return to Steelers team activities next week, but we’re hardly through the woods with him. Still a long summer ahead, training camp, and the suspension to deal with at the start of the season.  Between Ben and the constant drip, drip, drip of lockout news, it is hard to get excited for 2010 NFL anything.

Although speaking of the Pens and the Steelers, I am happy the Steelers schedule conspiracy theory about the Winter Classic being held at Heinz Field next year came true.

In none-sports related news, over on my Tumblr I am in the middle of retrospective of the top hits and new releases from April 23-July 11, 1985 to mark the 25th anniversary of the release of New Coke and the almost three months of a nation thought it was held hostage by a large soda company.  “The Music of New Coke” is probably one of the silliest ideas I’ve had, but I’m going to see it all the way through. And over on Ain’t It Cool News, the wondrous Mr. Beaks was kind enough to ask me for a review on SEX AND THE CITY 2.

Speaking of bad ideas, I decided I’m going to cover the foods of the World Cup Friday Football style. (Friday Footie Foodie?) It has been so much fun getting ready for this series, I may very well name my next blog, “Fuck Yeah, South American Sandwiches.”  (Well, fun aside of Slovenia and Slovakia.)  Look for the madness to get started on Tuesday.

Well, it looks like the interface still works.

And, oh? The Pirates?  WE’RE NEVER GOING TO SCORE.

I won’t lie to you, Slovak food is peasant food. We can’t afford all that fancy stuff that our rich-ass industrialized Czech brethren feel entitled to.

Nevertheless, necessity being the mother of invention and all, we have become masters of the potato. Seriously, there’s not a lot a Slovak can’t do with a root vegetable. If you’re interested in Mom’s recipe for potato pancakes, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
